Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization or simply IASTM comprises a new range tool that enables therapists to locate and treat patients diagnosed with soft tissue dysfunction. This technique is an extension of modern evolution from Chinese medicine called Gua Sha. This Gua Sha, however, was not used to treat musculoskeletal, but to remove bad chi out through the skin.
At Curis Functional Health, our doctors provide several soft tissue techniques to our patients with the aim of breaking scar tissue that forms in a muscle. This allows for a greater return in functionality and decreased pain in the targeted area.
We carry out IASTM with ergonomically designed instruments that detect and treat fascial restrictions, encourage rapid localization, and effectively treat areas with soft tissue fibrosis, chronic inflammation, or even degeneration.
Like most manual therapy methods, IASTM is reported to give the best results when combined with other therapeutic treatment methods such as exercises and additional modalities. For instance, joint mobilization aimed at correcting biochemical deficiencies by enhancing musculoskeletal strength and muscle imbalances should be combined with IASTM for the best results.
How IASTM works
IASTM instruments break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue effectively. The instrument has an ergonomic design that allows our experts to locate restrictions and to treat the affected part with the right amount of pressure.
By introducing controlled micro-trauma to the affected soft tissue structure, we get the simulation of local inflammatory response. Micro-trauma sparks reabsorption of excessive scar tissue [unwanted fibrosis] and enhances a chain of healing procedures thereby remodeling the affected soft tissue structures.
IASTM helps to break down adhesions within the soft tissue, which results from surgery, immobilization, repeated stresses among others. This allows for a fully functional restoration of the tissue.
Why You Need Our IASTM Services
- Neck pain
- If you’re diagnosed with Plantar Fasciitis
- When you suffer Rotator Cuff Tendinitis
- When you have heel pain
- Medial Epicondylitis
- To remove post-surgical and traumatic scar
- DeQuervain’s Syndrome
- When you suffer ligament sprains
- Muscle strains
- Back pain
- Shin splints
Benefits of IASTM
- Cellular Level
Studies show that IASTM help in increased fibroblast proliferation, reduction in scar tissue, increased vascular response and reshaping of unorganized collagen fiber matrix.
Fibroblast is the most necessary cell in the extracellular matrix [ECM]. ECM is the site for the repair, regeneration, and maintenance of soft tissue.
- Clinical Benefits
Studies have shown that IASTM results in improvements in range of motion, pain perception and strength after the treatment.
With our IASTM therapy, you benefit from mobilized muscles, improved mobility and stimulated rehabilitation as well as recovery.
